Reading Notes: Nine Ideal Indian Women, Part B

These notes are over Nine Ideal Indian Women by Sunity Devee. I would like to write about banishment into the forest this week because this seems like the major punishment most people are given. This seemed to make Durjodhan and the others bitter, which caused all the conflict. This would be a good thing to emphasize and explore. It would be great to write a story about one of the women solving the problem or even collaborating (go figure!).
HOW OLD IS UTTARA! What is this business about her playing with her toys while her husband (what?!?!?) is fighting a war! This is some freaky stuff. This is definitely a feminist story week cause this is CRAZY.  The women remember her as a CHILD WIFE.
Where is the girl power in these stories?
The minute there was a little bit of girl power and Sati transcended her roles to become a spiritual figure of sorts, the story, of course, became all about her husband and how he felt about HER decisions.
Having images in literature of men respecting the choices of women is vital. Not having these themes is actually dangerous the idea of object-women become prevalent in the social conscience and is the root of terrible acts like rape.
Uttara's childhood was taken from her! She was forced to be an adult before she even knew who she was. She was still playing with toys. It is our job to protect young girls and boys from this kind of mistreatment. I think I will write a story from the perspective of Uttara's mother, who will decide NOT allow her child to get married.

In an effort to celebrate women, here is a woman I admire.
