Reading Notes: The Ramayana Part C

These notes are over The Ramayana by Narayan. of The ability of characters to transform themselves and appear as others creates a lot of suspense in the story because the reader can never trust a speaker. Sita being held also creates suspense for the reader because they do not know what is happening to her or the damage being done by her capture. One of the most pivotal moments in the story is when Rama agrees to save Sita using an army and violence. This is the beginning of his becoming more than a warrior, instilling him will power that will feed the ego that eventually banishes Sita and all the happiness he got from their relationship. The poor, often unwholesome choices that lead to the major failing decisions are the most influential in a story.

Rama is also a poor example for readers. His mistakes are celebrated as a strength rather than identified as fear. He fights fire with fire and matches the poor decisions of others with equally poor decisions. There is no higher thought displayed, no careful consideration. The higher road is never taken by Rama. The only person who takes this road is Sita, who has no power. For symbolic reasons, the people who display wisdom should come to peaceful ends. This is because from their perspective their ends probably are peaceful.

Also, Sita's experience during Rama's search for her would be interesting and deserves more explanation.

Forest and natural habitats keep appearing anytime a character is associated with wisdom or need to rejuvenate themselves. I feel like this is an element of repetition and associations nature with wisdom in the stories.

The description of the natural setting after the rainy days ending was very vivid and enjoyable. The writer painted a picture with swans, lotus flowers, frogs, and other creatures. However, Rama ignores the beauty and sees only a reminder that his plans are falling behind. This is a prime example of nature trying to guide us away from distraction and harmful actions towards unity.
